I just saw that the Trump administration is blocking several companies from getting more H-1B visas, based on the fact these companies have been laying off American workers and bringing in foreign workers, with the claim, “We can’t find any American workers.”
As much as I wish this would help some of the US tech workers who have been laid off for months (or years), I expect to hear these companies announce multi-billion dollar investments in “remote software development divisions” any day now. Basically, they’ll go back to outsourcing to less-expensive labor, instead of bringing them into the US.
So, keep applying, but keep looking for an alternative. I suspect the IT job market will get less broken, but I don’t see it going back to what it was.
