Applying for the Microsoft BizSpark program

A while back, I did an evaluation of what direction I wanted to take for future work. Software as a Service won, but I’ve been looking at the Windows App Store and it seems like it might provide a better alternative.

The nice thing about an App Store is that they handle a certain amount of natural “marketing” and product discovery – admittedly, probably my biggest weakness.

So, I’m applying for the Microsoft BizSpark program. If you’re not familiar with it, this program gives you MSDN licenses and some mentoring resources. Since I need Visual Studio 2012, in order to create apps for the App Store, and I’d rather not spend $1200 buying my own license, this seems to be a great deal.

The first product I plan to build is a Windows 8 desktop version of my Decision Assistant program, currently running on http://howcanidecide.com. I already have the guts of the program written, so it’s something I could build and release quickly.

In the meantime, I’ll still do a little contract programming, to pay the bills. But I’d like to get away from that as quickly as possible.
